We can learn many lessons from the children of Israel and their journey in the wilderness. Perhaps one of the greatest lessons we can draw from their experience is how murmuring and complaining can cause you to miss your blessing. God desires the very best of the best for us. Sometimes we are not ready for the magnitude of that blessing, so God allows us to go through things in order to be made, to trust him, and to build our faith. God can give us anything in the entire world because it all belongs to Him. Tests, trials, and tribulations are all a part of the process that we go through in order for God to get the Glory. The children of Israel failed to realize that although they faced obstacles that God would have provided for them just like he has done time and time again.
In Exodus 16: 2, “The whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.” By this time God had already delivered them from the hand of Pharaoh in Egypt. He performed signs, wonders, and miracles. He rolled back the Red Sea and made a way for them to cross over and when Pharaoh's army pursued them still, he closed the sea, swallowing up Pharaoh's army all while leaving the Israelites unharmed! God hardened Pharaoh's heart which caused him to be firm in his decision to not let the children of Israel go. It was to prove to them that the God they prayed to in their time of captivity, had heard their cries and will deliver them in a way no man ever could. All for his Glory.
So here they are in need once again and forgetting that the Lord their God always supplied their needs, and began to speak against God’s servant, Moses and his brother Aaron. They were so focused on their wants and needs they forgot to exalt God for all that he had done. Many of us fall into the same traps as well. Sometimes believing because things are difficult that God has abandoned us and that he does not care. The truth is quite the opposite. He knows exactly where we are in our lives, in our hearts and our minds. He knows exactly what it takes for us to be made. Our oppositions and circumstances are merely an opportunity for God to show us just how deep his love is for us. One may argue, “Well if the Lord loved us he would not allow us to go through such insurmountable odds”. Jesus, his only begotten son went through so much more all for the sake of our lives, he sacrificed his very life. He is our example of holiness and righteousness. He was one with the Father and could have easily decided against crucifixion. But he endured so that we may have life, and life more abundantly.
If the children of Israel had trusted God based on his track record with them, they would have never complained against him and his servants. In fact, despite their murmurings, God in his mercy and love still provided food for them day and night. The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no”. Exodus 16:4. Notice that God told Moses he will rain bread for HIM. Moses already went through the proving stage with God. God had revealed himself to Moses time and time again and Moses trusted God. This was a lesson for the people. So that they can see the hand of the Lord for themselves and obey his laws. So they may learn to trust in him and seek his face, his ways, and obey. If they understood what God was doing for them, they would have been able to trust him and not complain. Faith is a requirement for us all. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6. Moses fulfilled his Faith requirement and continued to do so. So much in fact, that when the people troubled him, he took his concerns to the Lord and trusted him to show him the way. It is for us to prove to him how diligent and faithful we will be. In our complaints, all He hears is what we need and what we lack, but what are we going to do for him? What are we willing to give up in order to have those things we so desire?
